Booking a large tattoo, sleeve session, back piece, or detailed custom design is exciting—but a long tattoo appointment can also be physically demanding. Preparing ahead of time can make the experience much more comfortable and help your artist work efficiently. At New Hope Tattoo in Lombard, we recommend showing up rested, hydrated, well-fed, and ready for several hours in the chair. Here’s how to prepare for a long tattoo session.

Eat a Good Meal Before Your Appointment

One of the most important things you can do is eat a solid meal before getting tattooed. Sitting through several hours of tattooing can take a lot out of you, and coming in on an empty stomach may leave you feeling shaky, tired, or lightheaded.

Choose a balanced meal with:

  • Protein such as eggs, chicken, fish, or Greek yogurt
  • Complex carbohydrates like rice, oatmeal, potatoes, or whole grains
  • Healthy fats
  • Plenty of water

Avoid excessive alcohol the day before your appointment, and don’t rely on energy drinks or coffee as a substitute for food.

Stay Hydrated

Good hydration supports your overall comfort during the session. Start drinking plenty of water the day before and continue the morning of your appointment. Bring a water bottle with you, especially if you’re scheduled for a multi-hour tattoo session.

What to Wear to a Long Tattoo Appointment

Comfort should be your priority. Wear loose, breathable clothing that gives your artist easy access to the tattoo area.

For example:

  • Arm or shoulder tattoo: sleeveless or loose short-sleeve shirt
  • Leg tattoo: loose shorts or sweatpants
  • Back tattoo: button-up or zip-up top
  • Rib or torso tattoo: loose clothing that can easily be adjusted

Avoid wearing anything expensive or difficult to move around. Tattoo ink can occasionally get on clothing.

What to Bring With You

For longer appointments, pack a few simple essentials:

  • Water
  • Snacks such as fruit, granola bars, or crackers
  • Headphones
  • Phone charger
  • Entertainment such as music, podcasts, or a downloaded show
  • A sweatshirt or light layer in case you get cold

Your artist may also recommend taking short breaks during a longer session.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Showing up rested can make a noticeable difference. Fatigue can make sitting still more difficult and may make the tattooing process feel more uncomfortable. Try to get a full night of sleep before your appointment and avoid scheduling an exhausting day beforehand.

Plan Ahead for Your Next Tattoo

A little preparation can make a long tattoo session much easier. Eat well, stay hydrated, wear comfortable clothing, and bring a few essentials so you can settle in and focus on the artwork. Planning a sleeve, large custom tattoo, or multi-session project?
